AOA-approved Pediatric Residency Program

Palms West Hospital offers a three year fast track program in Pediatrics accredited by the American Osteopathic Association in a hospital dedicated to providing both graduate and undergraduate medical training. Palms West Hospital is an affiliate of the Palm Beach Centre for Graduate Medical Education. A fast track program meets the unique licensure requirements needed for osteopathic physicians in many states that require a physician to have completed a traditional internship prior to applying for a license to practice. By incorporating the required core internship rotations of emergency medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology into the first year of the pediatric residency, the graduating resident will have fulfilled all licensing requirements as well as be eligible for board certification.

Palms West Hospital has 29 private pediatric beds, a pediatric oncology center and an eight bed pediatric intensive care unit staffed by a team of pediatric critical care specialists. The units house the latest in pediatric equipment and are designed with rooms for the research and education of the house staff. The patient environment is enhanced by the addition of playrooms and child life services. The hospital also has an active obstetrical service and a nursery staffed by a team of neonatologist. 

The pediatric department has on staff 35 general pediatricians and 29 pediatric subspecialists. This allows the residents the opportunity to work one-on-one with the various subspecialists in daily patient care.  The hospital also boast a pediatric emergency department staffed with board certified pediatricians and a team specially trained for the special medical needs of children.

The Palms West Hospital Pediatric residency program is proud of its extensive outpatient program. Continuity Clinics occur at Florida Community Health Center sites (affiliated with Everglades AHEC) where the residents care for the underserved in a clinic setting supervised by pediatric faculty. The residents spend half a day per week in their first two years and a full day in their third year. Residents follow patients in the clinic over the course of the three years developing their own patient base.  In the last two years of training the residents have the opportunity for a private community based ambulatory experience as well. To fully round out their ambulatory experience rotations in adolescent, developmental and pediatric emergency medicine/ urgent care are also provided.

AOA-approved Internal Medicine/Pediatric Residency

Palms West Hospital and Columbia Hospital are joining forces to provide the first osteopathic Internal Medicine/ Pediatric residency in Florida. The program will provide fast track features to cover the requirements of the traditional internship for licensure. In four years it provides the residents all the tools necessary to successfully pass both the osteopathic pediatric and internal medicine boards.

The program is now accepting applications through ERAS for its first class, schedule to start summer of 2010.

The rotations will be laid out in 3 month block formats of pediatrics rotating with internal medicine throughout the four years. The pediatric portions will be provide at The Children’s Hospital at Palms West and the internal medicine portions at Columbia Hospital and at the Veterans Administration facility, both in West Palm Beach.

Hospitalist Fellowship Program

The Children’s Hospital at Palms West will offer a hospitalist fellowship starting summer of 2010. The fellowship will provide the opportunity to develop the skills necessary to be an effective hospitalist and will  provide training for careers in academic medicine. The Children’s Hospital at Palms West with its busy inpatient pediatric department and PICU is the ideal setting for this program. The hospital also trains future pediatricians and medical students allowing for strengthening of teaching and leadership skills. Pediatric Hospitalist fellowships are not ACGME nor AOA approved and there is no board available as of yet.
